Caught between the outdoors and computers my whole life.

Why I am changing my career trajectory at 28.

Recently, I spent my summers running a youth camp program in the US Virgin Islands. This is a view of my old “office”.

Since I was young, I have always had two main passions in life: the outdoors and computers. My weekends were either spent going camping, hiking, or backpacking or they were spent playing around on the family computer or on the latest video game console.

When I entered the University of Virginia in the Fall of 2010, I decided that I wanted to study a major that would allow me to continue my passion for the outdoors and be a good steward for the planet. Four years later, I graduated with a B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences and started working for a non-profit in Washington DC that specialized in getting youth into the outdoors.

Unfortunately, due to the current coronavirus pandemic and other factors, the company I worked for had to declare bankruptcy last year and I quickly realized that I needed to find a new career path to follow. The natural next step was to explore my other passion and figure out exactly how a computer thinks and understand the science behind my favorite apps and software.

Two weeks ago, I started an online coding boot camp with the Flatiron School and I have already learned about the basics of the software language called Ruby! Over the next five months, I hope to learn a great deal and be able to kick off a new career in a different industry. Follow me here on Medium to stay updated on this journey…
